CHAPTER 11

The house sat empty as the quickly retreating sun cast shadows on its entrance, making it look ominous. The sound of shuffling zombies, while not getting louder, was not going away either. Ben took the lead, walking up to the door.

“Why are you interested in this guy again?” Dan asked as the other two pulled out pistols while still holding their bikes. Dan, following their lead, did the same.

Ben checked the front door handle, finding it locked, as he assumed it would be. Rolling the cosmic dice, Ben reached into his vest, pulled out his flask, unscrewed the lid, and took a pull, lightly kicking over the flowerpot by the front door and exposing a shiny key that had been placed there recently.

“Is he always this dramatic?” Dan asked, shaking his head.

Ben reached for the key quickly, opening the door and beaming his flashlight into the entranceway as a blast of still warm air blew in his face. Taking a deep breath, Ben didn’t immediately smell anything out of sorts. He lightly knocked his pistol against the wall as the other three stayed as quiet as a church mouse. Nothing, no noise. The house was clear, at least from zombies. That was the last of Ben’s concerns, as well as Ian’s, who had also witnessed Ben’s once neighbor’s sheer evil after watching a video hidden in a secret room in his house back at the Sanctuary.

“Looks like we’re good,” Ben told the others, leading the group into the house. The living accommodations were middle-upper class, as were the majority of the homes in Fleming Island. Senior ranking Naval personnel and blue-collar, midlevel management thrived in these neighborhoods. The house had an open floor plan, with the dining room flowing into a little living space and the kitchen. The hallway to the left led to what appeared to be a handful of bedrooms and a bathroom. The massive stockpile of supplies thrown around the dining room and living area caught Ben and the group’s attention.

“Jackpot,” Dan exclaimed, walking up to a box of military MREs. “There must be at least a couple of years worth of supplies in here.”

Ian walked over to a case of waters, pulling one out and twisting off the cap. Ben slapped the bottle out of Ian’s hands before he could drink from it. “Not yet. We need to check this place out. He may have left some of this stuff out as bait. I wouldn’t put it past him to poison it,” Ben said as Kelly handed Ian her canteen.

“I’ve got a water tester in my bag. If you want to take a look around, I’ll check it out,” Dan offered, dropping his bag and pulling out a small pouch.

“I’m going to check upstairs. Ian, make sure nobody follows me,” Ben said as Ian nodded, fully understanding the weight of what he might find there. Kelly walked around the rest of the house, closing the blinds on the first floor as Ben pulled out his Rambo-sized Bowie knife.
